Initiatives

We implement diverse initiatives in education, health, water, and economic empowerment.

Overall Initiatives Progress

Wheelchairs and Mobility Aids

A disabled child stays at home because the family cannot afford a wheelchair; an elderly patient cannot reach the mosque or the hospital. This initiative provides wheelchairs, crutches and walking aids to people with disabilities and patients from families in need, after assessing the right aid for each person. One wheelchair costs ₦120,000.

Monthly Food Baskets for Families in Need

In many homes in Kano, the last days of the month come with too little food on the table, especially as food prices in Nigeria have risen sharply in recent years. This initiative provides a monthly food basket that feeds an average family for about a month: rice, millet, flour, cooking oil, sugar, salt and beans. Families are selected after a home visit to confirm their need, and our volunteers deliver the baskets in a way that protects their dignity. Our 2024 Ramadan food basket initiative reached 65 families. One basket costs ₦70,000.

Solar Street Lights for Dark Neighbourhoods

In many Kano neighbourhoods, complete darkness falls after sunset, making the walk to the mosque, and home from school or market, unsafe. This initiative installs solar-powered street lights that need no grid power or fuel and switch on automatically from dusk to dawn. We choose the darkest and busiest streets together with local residents, and install units with lithium batteries that last for years. One pole including installation costs ₦300,000, and lighting a full street (10 poles) costs ₦3,000,000.

Sponsor an Orphan in Nigeria

The Prophet ﷺ said: "I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like this," and he held up his index and middle fingers. Orphan sponsorship with Basiqat is comprehensive: food, education, healthcare and social follow-up for the orphan and their family. Orphans are selected from the neediest families in Kano after a field assessment, and we follow their schooling and health regularly. The Foundation has already run programmes supporting 200 orphans. Sponsoring an orphan costs ₦35,000 per month.

School Bags for Children in Need

At the start of every school year many children arrive without a single notebook or pen, and fall behind from the very first week. This initiative gives each child a complete school bag with exercise books, pens, ruler, eraser, geometry set and a lunch box, handed over at school before term begins. It works alongside our school uniform initiative so that children start the year with everything they need. One school bag costs ₦20,000.

Sponsor a Student's Education in Nigeria

A hard-working student may leave school halfway because the family cannot pay the fees. Sponsoring a student covers a full school year: tuition, books, uniform and supplies. We select students from orphans and low-income families, follow their results with their schools, and keep you informed about the student you support. It is one of the clearest forms of sadaqah jariyah, because the knowledge a child gains stays with them for life. Sponsoring one student for a school year costs ₦180,000.

Fighting Malaria in Kano Neighbourhoods

Nigeria alone carries about a quarter of the world's malaria cases, and children under five pay the highest price. In many Kano neighbourhoods, water stays stagnant in streets and drains after the rainy season and becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This initiative works on three levels: giving families insecticide-treated nets, spraying homes and neighbourhoods, and regularly pumping out stagnant water with vacuum trucks. A treated net costs ₦8,000, spraying one home ₦15,000, and a full neighbourhood campaign ₦2,500,000.

Skills for Women: Tailoring Training & Starter Kits

Many mothers in Kano support their families alone, with no skill that brings a steady income from home. This initiative trains women for three months in tailoring and garment-making, then gives each graduate a sewing machine and starter materials so she can start a small business right away. Trainees are chosen from widows, mothers of orphans and low-income families, and we follow their income after graduation. Training and equipping one woman costs ₦250,000.

Mosque Renovation in Nigeria

In many neighbourhoods and villages around Kano, people pray in mosques with cracked roofs, no carpets, no water for ablution and no lighting. This initiative renovates run-down mosques: repairing roofs and walls, replacing carpets, providing ablution facilities and lighting, and setting up a Quran study corner where possible. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise." Renovating a small mosque costs ₦3,000,000, and you can contribute a share of ₦25,000.

Back to School: Returning Out-of-School Children to Education

Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the world, many of them in the north. Some never enrolled; others dropped out because their families could no longer afford fees, uniforms or supplies. Through this initiative we meet the family, enrol the child in a nearby school, provide the uniform, school bag and first-year fees, and follow the child's attendance through the year so they do not drift back to the street. Returning one child to school costs ₦80,000.

Women's Economic Empowerment Program

An intensive 3-month training program qualifying 80 women to start their own businesses.

Medical Treatment for Patients in Need

Many patients in Kano delay treatment or stop halfway because they cannot pay for medicine, surgery or tests. This initiative helps cover treatment for the neediest cases among the families we support: medicines for chronic illness, surgical operations, and outstanding hospital bills. Every case is reviewed with a medical report, and payments go directly to the hospital, not to the patient. We already work with Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where in 2025 our volunteers visited and supported 200 children receiving treatment.

Water Wells for Remote Villages in Nigeria

In many villages around Kano, women and children walk long distances every day to fetch unsafe water, losing hours that should go to school and work. This initiative drills deep boreholes with hand pumps or solar pumps in villages without water, after a geological survey of the site and a water quality test after drilling, and trains the community to maintain the well so it lasts for years. A water well is among the greatest forms of sadaqah jariyah, benefiting people and animals for as long as it flows. A hand-pump borehole costs ₦2,500,000, a solar borehole with a storage tank ₦5,000,000, and you can contribute a share of ₦50,000.

Helping Hand: Emergency Relief for Families

A fire that destroys a home, a flood that sweeps away everything a family owns, or the sudden loss of a breadwinner: moments when a family needs someone beside them the same day, not weeks later. The Helping Hand fund lets us respond immediately with food, bedding, cooking utensils, clothing and urgent cash support for families who have lost their income. Help is given after a quick field check, and any balance is kept for the next emergency. An emergency kit for one family costs ₦50,000, and you can give any amount.

Vocational Training for Young Men

A young man without a trade spends his days looking for casual work; a young man with a skill can support his family. This initiative offers practical courses for young men in trades that the Kano market needs, such as home electrical work, solar installation, phone repair, welding and carpentry, and gives every graduate a basic toolkit to start earning. Training one person with a toolkit costs ₦200,000.

Repairing Homes for Families in Need

A home with a leaking roof or a wall close to collapse, where children have no safe place to sleep or study. This initiative repairs the homes of families in need who have children: fixing roofs, plastering, doors and windows, and toilets. Priorities are set after an engineering inspection, and the work is done by craftsmen from the same neighbourhood. Repairing one home costs ₦800,000 on average.

Dressed to Learn Initiative

The "Your Uniform is on Us" initiative, in its first phase, focuses on providing school uniforms to the most needy male and female students, as it is one of the basic needs associated with the educational environment, which the association has monitored through observation and field inspection. The first phase aims to provide 100 school uniforms to 100 male and female students, with the possibility of future expansion to include other educational needs.

Basiqat Charity Foundation is a registered non-profit in Nigeria, working to achieve dignified lives through education, health, and economic empowerment programs.
